چکیده

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are an important tool for management and conservation play increasingly recognised role in societal human well-being. However, the assessment of MPAs often lacks a simultaneous consideration ecological socio-economic outcomes, this can lead to misconceptions on effectiveness MPAs. In perspective, we present transdisciplinary approach based Delphi method mapping evaluating their ability protect biodiversity while providing Ecosystem Services (ES) related well-being benefits – i.e., ecosystem outputs from which people benefit. We highlight need include dimensions marine protection such assessments, given that over time is conditional social, cultural institutional contexts evolve. Our supports Ecosystem-Based Management highlights importance achieving restoration, conservation, sustainable development objectives relation EU Directives as Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), Maritime Spatial Planning (MSPD), Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

Interplay of multiple goods, ecosystem services, and property rights in large social-ecological marine protected areas

Protected areas are a cornerstone of biodiversity conservation, and increasingly, conservation science is integrating ecological and social considerations in park management. Indeed, both social and ecological factors need to be considered to understand processes that lead to changes in environmental conditions. Here, we use a social-ecological systems lens to examine changes in governance thro...

Strengthening protected areas for biodiversity and ecosystem services in China.

Recent expansion of the scale of human activities poses severe threats to Earth's life-support systems. Increasingly, protected areas (PAs) are expected to serve dual goals: protect biodiversity and secure ecosystem services. We report a nationwide assessment for China, quantifying the provision of threatened species habitat and four key regulating services-water retention, soil retention, sand...

Placing marine protected areas onto the ecosystem-based management seascape.

The rapid increase in the science and implementation of marine protected areas (MPAs) around the world in the past 15 years is now being followed by similar increases in the science and application of marine ecosystem-based management (EBM). Despite important overlaps and some common goals, these two approaches have remained either separated in the literature and in conservation and management ...

Marine protected areas and ocean basin management

1. All reserve designs must be guided by an understanding of natural history and habitat variability. 2. Differences in scale and predictability set aside highly dynamic pelagic systems from terrestrial and nearshore ecosystems, where wildlife reserves were first implemented. Yet, as in static systems, many pelagic species use predictable habitats to breed and forage. Marine protected areas (MP...
